The rumor is Alex Leverington is going to demo SimpleTicket at BarCamp Texas this weekend. I was taking a look at the new code and realized the second version has fewer lines of code than the first version. Why, you ask? Because this time we did it the “rails way”, using the power of rails instead of working in the traditional way. Thanks 37 Signals! You guys Rock!
Whurley’s BarCamp Texas is being held between 8.26.06 & 8.27.06 Thistle Cafe ,300 W. 6th Street, Austin, Texas.

The new code was installed internally last week. We have been playing with it and making modifications. There are still some functional issues as well as visual issues. We are updating some of the wireframes to more closely reflect the needs of the design. Here is an example:
Note the additional button to replace fake buttons. Note the feed icon. Note the tagging function. The text on the lower right corner describes three of the drop down screens.  We are still working on a release very soon. Keep your fingers crossed.

I noticed a few comments from Ward and Vince regarding the status of SimpleTicket as an open source project. To Ward’s question, “…does this mean that SimpleTicket is no longer open source?” Absolutely not, we are committed to keeping SimpleTicket open source using the GPL.
To Vince’s answer, “…he took it back in house to develop.” The hard part about building software is deciding what to build. In the end we need SimpleTicket for our business and we must have certain features. One day I looked at the demo version and it looked nothing like the software we had intended, instead it was circa 1999 radio buttons. I proposed to the two most active non-Architel developers that they continue the project with their vision and we would continue a different project using our vision. They decided they would rather complain than to continue their own version of the project.
To meet our deadlines (we had missed our May deadline working with the community) we hired coders to complete the second version of SimpleTicket. Once it is released we would love to start building a community around the project. Ward, we would love to have you on board. But just as I said to the other developers, I don’t want you to waste your time on code that will never find its way into SimpleTicket. By working together we can make sure that we all get what we want. Go ahead and wait for the new code and if you like it and want to get involved please give me a call or send me an email.

Thank you for all of your emails of support for the project. We certainly appreciate it! Building software is harder than it looks. Last night we engaged a new rails coder in France to begin refactoring the code and implementing our vision for the UI.
Last night we met via IM and decided to rebuild SimpleTicket from scratch. Once we have built the new base we will begin plugging in each module previously created by Architel’s coders as well as those created by the community. Next we will work to integrated the UI contemplated by the wireframes Alex created (with various modifications).
What is new? Well, as of last night our coders have started work! Finally! We will keep you posted on our progress… (no more red tape)

We have had a couple of questions on support for databases other than MySQL. We posted a response on the mailing list but thought that it might be helpful to list here as well.
The short answer is that once the rails clean-up happens (target date May 1st) any database supported by Rails should work with SimpleTicket. Today we have specific MySQL calls (a rails no-no) in SimpleTicket, our rails clean-up should remove these and
make any compatible database work with the program. For more information visit:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/PostgreSQL
Our first major code release is scheduled for May 1st (we have never met a release date before, but we are hopeful) and this release should be friendlier to rails novices.
